Alright, so I got this idea the other day to do something a little different. I’ve always been a fan of classy watches, but sometimes the price tags on those things are just insane. So, I thought, why not try to remake one of the classics? I decided to go with the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, specifically the 5738R model. That watch just screams class. I mean, it’s one of the slimmest ones they make, and the rose gold? Forget about it.
First off, I started digging around for info on this watch. Found out the 5738R is like, 34.5 mm by 39.5 mm, and it’s only 5.9 mm thick. It’s wild how they get it that slim. I saw some prices online, and some places were selling it for around $27,079. Yeah, that’s not happening for me, so I figured it was time to get creative.
Now, the whole design of this watch is based on the “golden section” – some ancient Greek math stuff. It’s a ratio of 1 to 1.6181, and apparently, it’s the basis for a bunch of famous art and architecture. I thought that was pretty cool, so I made sure to keep that in mind.
I started by sketching out the design. The Golden Ellipse has this unique shape with what they call “ears.” I tried to get that down as best as I could, keeping the proportions right. It was a bit tricky, but after a few tries, I had something I was happy with.
Next, I had to figure out the materials. Rose gold was out of the question, so I looked for some alternatives. Found some decent rose gold-colored metal that wouldn’t break the bank. I also needed to get a movement for the watch. The real one uses this ultra-precise quartz movement, but I went with a cheaper, standard quartz movement for mine. It’s not the same, but it gets the job done.
Putting it all together was the real challenge. I had to cut the metal into the right shape, which took some patience. Then, I assembled the movement and attached the watch face. The hands were a bit fiddly, but I managed to get them on there. Finally, I added a simple leather strap to complete the look.
The Results
- The final product looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. It’s not an exact replica, but it definitely captures the essence of the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738R.
- It’s got the slim profile, the “ears,” and that overall classy vibe. Plus, I did it all without spending a fortune.
I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It was a fun project, and now I have a unique watch that I can wear. It’s not the real deal, but it’s my own little version, and that’s what matters. If you’re into watches and looking for a fun project, I’d say give this a shot. It’s a great way to learn about watch design and get a little creative. Just don’t expect to fool anyone into thinking it’s a real Patek Philippe!
