Alright, let me tell you about this thing I did with the OMEGA Speedmaster 310.92.44.50.01.001, also known as the Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon.” It’s a pretty slick watch, and I wanted to see what it was all about, especially this whole “rocket” thing in the name.
So first off, I got my hands on this watch. It’s got a nice size, 44.25 mm, not too big, not too small. Feels good on the wrist. OMEGA is calling it the “Dark Side of the Moon,” and yeah, it’s got this dark, almost black look to it. They did something to the movement to make it look like that, something about the Apollo 8 mission – you know, the one that went around the moon?
I started messing around with it, wearing it for a few days, just to get a feel for it. It’s comfortable, I’ll give it that. The strap is some kind of rubbery material, feels durable. I was curious about all the tech they put into it. OMEGA is always going on about their “state-of-the-art technology” and their fancy materials.
- First, I wore it around like a regular watch. You know, to work, to the store, just everyday stuff.
- Then I started looking closer at the details. That blackened movement is pretty cool, I guess it’s supposed to remind you of the moon’s surface or something.
- After that, I tried to figure out what makes it a “rocket” watch. Is it just because it’s named after a space mission? Or is there something more to it? Still haven’t quite figured that part out, to be honest.
The Apollo 8 Connection
I did some reading about the Apollo 8 mission. It was a big deal, first time humans orbited the moon. So I get why OMEGA would want to make a watch to celebrate that. It’s a piece of history on your wrist, kind of. This watch, with its dark look, is supposed to be a tribute to that mission. They used all these different materials to make it, trying to make it special, I suppose. I guess it is a cool thing that I can feel the history of human’s great space travel by wearing it.
In the end, it’s a nice watch. Looks cool, feels good. Is it worth the price? I don’t know, that’s up to you. But I enjoyed playing around with it and learning a bit more about the Apollo 8 mission. It’s more than just a watch, it’s like a little story on your wrist. Still not sure about the “rocket” part, though. Maybe I’ll figure that out someday.
