Yesterday, I got my hands on the new Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary watch. What a mouthful, right? Anyway, I’ve been eyeing this piece since they announced it back on October 5th, 2020. Yeah, it took a while, but trust me, it was worth the wait.
I remember reading somewhere that this watch celebrates the 50th anniversary of Omega receiving the “Silver Snoopy Award” from NASA astronauts back in 1970. Pretty cool story, huh? So, I started digging around online, reading forum posts, and trying to learn everything I could about it.
This thing is not a limited edition, but everyone and their mother seems to want one. So I called up a few Omega boutiques, no luck, all on back order. Finally, I managed to secure one through a specialty store. I was so excited that I went to pick it up right away!
- First impression: the box is fancy! It comes in a special presentation box, which adds to the whole experience.
- Size-wise, it’s 42mm, which sits perfectly on my wrist. Not too big, not too small, just right.
- Strap: It comes on a blue nylon fabric strap. I was initially a bit worried that it might not be comfortable, but it turned out to be surprisingly nice.
The back of the watch is where the real magic happens. I don’t understand all the technical stuff, but it’s got this cool animation thing going on. They really went all out with the design.
Oh, and I learned something interesting about the Apollo 13 mission. There’s a message on the watch that says, “What could you do in 14 seconds?” It refers to some critical moment during the mission. I need to read up more on that.
The whole process of getting this watch was a bit of an adventure, but I am so glad I persevered. It is a fantastic watch. I have been wearing it all day, and I can not stop looking at it. I think I am in love.
