Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with watches lately, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. Today, I want to spill the beans on my little project: trying to make a decent fake of a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, the platinum one, you know, the real classy version.
First off, I did some digging. I looked around at what’s out there, what other people have done, you know, the whole nine yards. I found that there is a product database called “2BA”. I browsed there, but I found nothing I needed.
I then jumped to searching the annotations of the novel “Pride and Prejudice” with “253f: vertical light and horizontal heavy ╀ 9536” as keywords, but it turned out to be useless.
I spent a whole afternoon on a platform called “Hack the Box” trying to learn something, but I found that the difficulty level was too high for me, and I didn’t learn anything in the end.
Then I used a library searching tool called “OneSearch”.
Finally, I found some useful stuff after searching for a long time. You can actually find some decent parts if you know where to look. This book had traits of high-performing teams, the principles of bioethics, etc. Although these things are not directly related to my topic, it seems to indicate that I am on the right track and I feel I am one step closer to success.
So, I started with the basics. Got myself a movement, not a real Rolex one, obviously, but something that keeps time well enough. Then came the case. This was tricky. I wanted it to feel heavy, like the real deal, so I went with some other metal. Found one online after a bunch of searching. It wasn’t perfect, but it had the right shape and a good weight to it.
Next up, the dial and hands. Now, this is where things got interesting. I tried a couple of different dials, but none of them really clicked. Some were too shiny, others just looked off. Finally, I found one that was just right. It had that cool, icy blue look, like the real platinum Daytona. The hands were easier. Found a set that looked pretty close to the originals, and popped those on.

- Tried a bunch of dials before finding the right one.
- Got some hands that looked the part.
Putting it all together was a bit of a pain. I’m no watchmaker, that’s for sure. But after a few tries, and a couple of close calls, I managed to get everything in place. And you know what? It didn’t look half bad. It felt solid, had that nice weight to it, and the dial really popped.
The Final Result
Now, I’m not saying it’s a perfect replica. Far from it. If you put it next to a real one, you’d see the differences. But for something I just threw together, it’s pretty impressive. It’s become my daily wear, and I’ve even gotten a few compliments on it. People think it’s the real thing! Of course, I don’t have the heart to tell them it’s just a little project I worked on.
So, yeah, that’s my story about making a “high imitation” Rolex Daytona. It was a fun little adventure, and I learned a lot along the way. Maybe I’ll try another model next, who knows? The possibilities are endless!
